After looking through some of the archived items in my golfing hard drive I came across the “Dave Pelz Short Game Handicap Test”. For those of you who don’t know Dave is a NASA scientist turned golf instructor who happens to be the short game coach of one of the best wedge players on the planet, Phil Mickleson. Dave has been an extremely well respected coach and Author for a number of years now, and his short game handicap test is something I would encourage all players to try every so often. During this test you will go through a wide variety of golf shots from cut lob’s to 80ft putts. The purpose of the test is to try and assess your ability to play several different shots around the green. One small word of caution however, I must say the handicap that is associated with the results can be extremely harsh, so if you happen to show up as a 36 handicap on any particular test, don’t fret too much, just look at it as an area in which you can improve on in the future. The purpose of the test is not so much to allocate you a specific handicap, but more so to give you a baseline score for each aspect of the short game, and help you figure out what areas you need to focus on improving.
